CSS case: off-center layouts and backgrounds

I designed a new site alright. I had the greatest difficulty figuring out the trick that is necessary to make a very large background element that should seemlessly fit into the layout crossbrowser compatible and support many screen resolutions.

Simply said: sometimes you’ll design a site which would only support screen resolutions over 1400, 1500px in size, but you wouldn’t mind if for the lower screenresolutions it would cut some of it off on the left side. Let me show you what I mean:
