I was cruising some recipes like I usually do on fridays until I came to the Japanese section of a famous Dutch supermarket. Despite that the Dutch have a connection to the sea, they don’t eat much fish, let alone raw fish. So I wish you good luck to find any fish that’s good, let alone fresh enough to eat raw in this country. Even specialized fish markets carry nothing you would want to eat raw. There’s only one place that sells fish good enough that I know of, but you have to come on a good day. Perhaps that’s why the idea alone turns people off here. lol. The only thing eaten raw is herring. And I goddamn hate herring.
Meanwhile it appears there’s an entire adaptation of Japanese food, asin being Dutchified. I jokingly called it the “Japollander cuisine“. Adjusted to Dutch taste and availability of ingredients I presume. Many supermarkets now carry “nori”, “pickled ginger”, “rice vinegar”, “japanese soy sauce”, and sushi rice of course. What I keep missing is that lighter sauce usually served with gyoza. I also wish you good luck to find any round dumpling dough. The alternative is sold frozen solid in squares. Oh sod off, I know tators suck and this is why we have no real cuisine of our own. Frietje? Can’t even have that because it’s a trademark of Belgium. ;_; Stamppot dan maar.
On to the Japollander cuisine.
From left to right:
- Sushi rolls with smoked chicken. That’s a first for me, I don’t know about you. The orange stuff is carrot salad.
- Shrimp sushi. Interesting detail is the dijon mustard used to stick the shrimp on top. I usually cut them open and try to flatten ‘em so it at least looks right, but okay.
- And then my personal favorite: the herring sushi.
Oh and I also spotted a temaki roll that uses roastbeef instead of fish.
